Photorefractive Adaptive Phased Array Radar Processor
The processing of the wide-bandwidth data from large phased array radars
with thousands of elements
is a nearly intractable signal processing task for
conventional digital signal processors, so as an alternative
we are investigating
optical approaches that rely on the 3-dimensional signal
processing capabilities of dynamic volume holograms.
We have designed, analyzed, and demonstrated an
adaptive phased-array radar optical processor using photorefractive
crystals as the adaptive weights to null out correlated jammers and beam-steer
the antenna pattern towards desired signals.
This is the first optical processor that effortlessly scales up to be
able to adaptively process the data from thousands of phased array elements.
